The History of Scrooge Dollar$ and Fantastiliardi

Learn about Italy Notes created during 1969 and 1997

Several collectible notes came out of Italy. The first made in 1969, created in Italy by Elah Chewing Gum in collaboration with Disney, these Scrooge Dollar$ were issued in $, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 denominations. These Uniface Banknotes featured the members of the Donald Duck family and are from the imaginary Banca di Paperopoli (Bank of Duckburg).

Next identified by the name Topolino, which is the Italian name for Mickey Mouse.  It also happens to be a comic book series starring Disney characters that has been published since 1932 and continues to this day.  Throughout the history of Topolino, the comic book produced promotional ‘Gadgets’ in the form of coins and bank notes.  For one year only, in 1997, Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (one of Italy’s largest banks) collaborated with Topolino to distribute Fantastiliardi (Italy Fantasy Dollars).  The notes were minted by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (Italian State Mint and Polygraphic Institute) in denominations of 1, 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000.

Other prominent notes include the Accornero (Paperdollari) distributed in Biscuit boxes and offering monthly winners the chance at prizes. The final we will illustrate is the only one recognized as actual currency during the mid to late 1970's and that was the Italy (IBI Bank) Mini-Check.

Elah Italy Banknotes (Scrooge Dollar$)

1969 (Single Issue)

In 1969, created in Italy by Elah Chewing Gum in collaboration with Disney, these Scrooge Dollar$ were issued in $, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 denominations. These Uniface Banknotes featured the members of the Donald Duck family and are from the imaginary Banca di Paperopoli (Bank of Duckburg).  These are extremely rare due to the fact that they were wrapped around bubble gum and children didn't think to collect these. As these were folded from the start they typically are not graded like other notes. These notes are highly sought after and extraordinarily difficulty to find.

Produced in 1988 and printed in Milan Italy. These rare Banknotes were distributed along with biscuit boxes by Accornero "I Frollini di Nonna Papera" (The Biscuits of Grandma Duck). These were famous biscuits each with the faces of Disney characters. In each package you found a Paperdollari, an authentic watermarked banknote. Each month for 12 months a different number was picked allowing the winner to receive 1 million in gold tokens. There were 8 total notes in the entire collection each with its own denomination and color.

Italy Banknotes - (IBI Bank) Walt Disney Mini-Check

During the rise of inflation in Italy in the 1970's there was a shortage of 50 and 100 lira coins which lasted from 1975 to 1979.  As the demand outstripped the small coinage minted by the Italian government and the shortage persisted, it caused merchants to pay more for coins than their face value.  Due to this shortage, candy, telephone tokens, plastic discs specific to a store were used as alternatives since they could not make change for purchases.

One alternative solution to coins came in the form of mini checks that banks throughout Italy started issuing. Unlike some of the fantasy notes licensed by Disney. These small size checks were issued as an emergency small currency accepted by the public due to the lack of coins as official currency.
