The History of Disney Dollars
Learn about the traditional Disney Dollars created between 1987 - 2014
Disney Dollars were first issued in 1987 from the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland California. Disney Dollars were legal tender issued by the Walt Disney Company, which were accepted in Walt Disney World, Disneyland California, Disney Stores, Disney Cruise ships and in parts of Castaway Cay. They are a currency that can be used at Disney resorts and shops still today.
Launched as an official currency with a U.S. dollar equivalent, they were discontinued in 2016 and are no longer available for purchase. They were made in denominations of $1, $5, $10 and $50 and remain quite collectible. Featured over the years were various Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald, Simba and Goofy. Since Disney Dollars could be used across Disney property, they actually had numerous anti-counterfeiting measures built-in to the design. They were printed on 100% cotton paper and Scrooge McDuck was the signing treasurer.

What are Disney Dollars and are they collectible?
Disney Dollars are a form of corporate Scrip, a substitute for legal tender, previously sold by The Walt Disney Company and redeemable for goods or services at many Disney facilities. These Dollar Bills may also be conversationally referred to as Notes. Disney stopped distributing and printing the currency on May 14, 2016, but guests may continue to use previously purchased Disney Dollars at Walt Disney World Resorts, the Disneyland Resorts, Disney Cruise Lines, Disney’s Castaway Cay, and select Disney Store locations in the United States.
Disney Dollars fall under the category of Disneyana. Disneyana is the term used to describe collectible items produced or licensed by the Walt Disney Company. As with any collectible item, supply and demand dictate the value. As production has ended, the supply of Disney Dollars is limited and declining. As long as there is demand for Disneyana, it is safe to assume the value will continue to climb for Disney Dollars. Below is the complete list of Disney Dollars produced over the years. Some of the rarer items are highlighted in red.
The Autonomy of the Disney Dollar
Rarity, collectability and eye appeal will all affect the price and having a Disney Dollar graded by a reputable company will appeal more to collectors. As we look at the different denominations over the years the larger bills typically will have a higher value associated with them. Now what you will find is that bills in the same year may be going for drastically different prices do to the serial numbers associated with them.
All Disney Dollars, expect Proofs, have unique serial numbers and are linked to a series. Understanding the serial numbers can be a bit confusing but mostly comes down to the first letter of the serial number in most cases. If it being with the letter A, B or E it was issued in Disneyland California. If the initial letter is a D or F, then it came from Disney World in Florida and the final category were the bills sold in the Disney Stores which started with the letter T. You may also see some serial numbers that start with a letter and end with a letter. This is common for most years but within a few years bills may only reflect the letter at the beginning of the serial number. Matching sets and different denominations with the same serial number in the same set also increase the value.
